Have you tried restarting your laptop? Sometimes this is all you need to do. It may just need to update and refresh itself.

did you just download messanger? try goin to the preferences and then to connection. and under connection choose the "no proxies" button if its not already marked. wat kind of windows are you running?

Try uninstalling it then installing it again i had a similar problem and when I did that it worked :)
